The UK government has added 11 new destinations to its official advisory list concerning the threats of methanol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following multiple serious events like the tragic demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical often utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not intended for human consumption.
