Substantial Internet Disruption Impacts Many Online Platforms and Mobile Apps
An extensive web outage has disrupted numerous sites and mobile apps around the world, and users noting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.
The impacted platforms comprise Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-owned services including its main retail website and the Ring security home security firm.
Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems accessing the HMRC website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring customers used social media to state their security devices were not working.
In the UK alone, accounts of disruptions on individual applications ran into the many thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the outage began in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a section that offers essential internet framework for numerous businesses, who utilize capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the world’s largest cloud computing system.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “elevated failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The ripple effect seemed to affect apps worldwide, and the outage tracking website indicating problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks internet outages, further indicated a surge in outages on Monday morning, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the issues originated.
