Previous FBI chief James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative submitted the response representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

His attorney announced he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they planned to submit several motions to terminate the case before a court case, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's proceedings was initially overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his probe into another rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the court on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his spouse, his wife and offspring his daughter, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.

After listening to the court recite his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the charges.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Background Context

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was fired about a few months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege the former director lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and impede" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

In a video Mr Comey posted to his Instagram after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and accused Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against the former director came after Trump posted on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
