Exceptional Crimson Electrical Discharge Captured in the Atmosphere
A group of image specialists in New Zealand have managed to photograph photographs of crimson flashes, one of the least common celestial events on Earth, in which luminous crimson flashes appear in the heavens.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
The photographers began their evening to shoot the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on 11 October, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.
Initially believing they would be lucky to get clear skies that night, but their night became “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.
Upon examining his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had photographed red sprites,” he explained. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the night.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. Unlike traditional lightning that shoots towards the ground, the phenomena propel upward towards the mesospheric region, forming structures that are similar to pillars, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a such an event was recorded – unintentionally – in the late eighties, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.
Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing right at an occurrence when it happened – just a perfect coincidence observing the appropriate section of the firmament and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.
Seeing the occurrences was a goal for the artist, an honored dark sky artist. “It looks like you’re seeing something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it’s really interesting to witness.”
Skill-Based and Creative Mastery
Photographing a such an event requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of science and innovative thinking, he said. “It’s a really involved type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
A different team member remarked it was counted as the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I witnessed the galactic band illuminating above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of energy moved above a storm at a great distance,” he explained.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no further recordings showing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in a single image.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you are observing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
